What Is A Bed & Breakfast?

Since half of our guests have never stayed in a Bed and Breakfast, they always ask the question what is a Bed & Breakfast.

We share a "Quiet Serenity by the Creek" with relaxation, laughter, friendship - the best of life at Creekside B&B; we offer a private, personal touch with our homemade breakfasts and share "what's our town about"; our guests share where they went, what they enjoyed (or not) while they were exploring; we get to learn things about our area that we did not know; we develop friendships with many of our guests over a cup of tea, glass of wine, hot chocolate and "something to chew on" at the end of the day, we celebrate honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays, births...deaths; we hug our guests or shake their hands as they depart for the next part of their adventure.

Summer of 2011 here at Creekside B&B, we have mowed new paths for our Nature Walk and added a new sign!

We have added 3 Koi and 10 goldfish to our pond; hopefully "Gotcha" will keep the heron away!

Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson has also coordinated with MJ's Ranch House here in Crawford, Nebraska to have a dinner playhouse!! Looking forward to this moment!!!

Chicago Trip 2010

After a very successful summer with the opening of Creekside B&B, we went to Chicago for a well-deserved break with Diane and Fran. The first day we were there we had Chicago's finest - hotdog - was an awesome experience in that I had never seen so many ways of serving a hotdog. We definitely went to a game a Wrigley Field - was beautiful weather, but the team did not do as well as the weather!!
Lloyd wanted to pose for this sign that we saw as we were strolling the streets of Chicago!

Here we are on the 18th floor in our VRBO - was a fabulous time and the views were amazing!!
We decided to take the architectural boat ride - was well worth the money and time; learned alot of history; in the background is the tallest building in Chicago - we all took our turns on the Edge of the Ledge - just don't look down.

This bedroom has a Morrocan theme with a relaxed, light, airy feel to the room. It has two queen-sized beds with multiple pillows to choose from.Our second bedroom has a daybed with Tempur-Pedic mattress which can be used as a lounge and/or as a bed in this 3-person bedroom

This kitchen has everything and the kitchen sink; off to the side is a refrigerator and a washer/dryer for the guests to use on their vacations.

This is our dining room that guests will use for their other meals. We will bring down freshly ground morning coffee to the guests at about 6:30 am and breakfast is served upstairs with the hosts at anytime between 7:00am - 8:30am.

The guests also have the option of eating upstairs with the hosts. Creekside B&B breakfast will consist of one main entree (one of our most popular entrees is "Eggs in a Basket") and has the following sides to choose from, which you can have all of them or one of them, your choice: bacon, sausage, egg, hashbrowns (Lloyd does an awesome job at this), orange juice, cranberry juice, baked goods and / or seasonal fruits.

GETTING CLOSER TO OPENING DAY

A friend gave us the decanter that says "Bless this House" and we also have received our first shipment of tourism materials/pamphlets/maps to give to our guests - it is exciting to be so close to our Opening Day, which is June 15, 2010.
I love pottery and this piece is from Klind Pottery in Montana.

Red Rock Gravel Delivered

Red Rock Gravel = beautiful and durable; it comes out of Hot Springs, South Dakota; Terry Connell did some awesome manuevers to back this down our driveway from the road.

Mr Connell is dumping the rock as he is pulling forward.

Now, it is time for Lloyd to get out the skidloader and move rock everywhere. Another load will be coming to spread for Creekside B&B driveway.

Also, on this day we are installing the new carpet in the B&B and upstairs to the main level. We will have the option for our guests to come upstairs to eat with us or they can remain in the B&B to eat at their dining table. Getting excited to opening soon.

Floor Experts

We are finally adding all of the pictures that show how Creekside B&B became a reality.

The kids - Ben & Lisa - came up to help us with completing the kitchen tiled floor and then starting on the wood floor. Lloyd and Ben were celebrating the moment!!

The tile floor went fast - once everyone had their specific job.

Lisa would cut, Lloyd and Ben would take turns placing the stone so that it lined up with others and then added the spacers.

Shadow likes the entrance to our almost finished new basement - we think it is beginning to have a look of fun - now that the walls are up!!

Is this the mad scientist at work with his garbage disposal or who do you think this is with his flashing smile?

Awe - the kitchen now looks like it might become something useful.

Freshly painted drawers and doors - great job!

Lloyd added his special touches to the kitchen - love those lights!!

Shirley's work or is it fun - is about one-third of the way done.

Shadow still thinks the entrance is great -

The completed bathroom 'warm tiles' - will be great to try it out and have your toes warmed up after a shower!!

Is this right - yeah, it is coming out exact.

If you click on the pic above, you will see that our friends came back - we have 2 drake and 2 hen mallard ducks - they had fun this morning racing on the water and splashing everywhere - what great ducky energy!!

This rainbow trout thinks that Spring is right around the corner.

Look carefully at the lower middle, a bit to the right - you can see our fish - have been very active these past few days.

Looks like our barley balls from last year has helped the clearness of our water - look carefully and you will see our fish in the middle of the pond!!

Lloyd is in our second bedroom that needs textured - he is doing an awesome job and now has the technique - especially after the "oops" in

the bathroom - the tool came apart and the mud went to the floor and all over the step ladder - Lloyd's words were at little more than 'Oh, shoot!'

Our Friend Ray let us use his "banjo" which is a tool that

combines the tape and mud at the same time - can get the job done very quick!!!

It is what Lloyd and I work on everyday - hope to have all of the basement ready for flooring by mid March - it will be great to go to the next steps - heck, it will be great to not have to work on the basement everyday.

GRANDMA T'S 90TH BIRTHDAY

My two great nieces, Claudia and Abby, helped me decorate the cake for Grandma T. I'm usually a perfectionist when it comes to my cake decorating; however, in my hurry to get things together for the trip to Iowa- I forgot to bring an important part of the cake. I had baked and frosted all six pieces to this cake and placed them in boxes the night before we left.

On our way across Nebraska and then Iowa, I had a funny feeling that I forgot to bring something - we all have those feelings when we pack in a hurry. Sure enough when we took a break in Des Moines, I looked in the back and there was not the original six boxes. I immediately called Hy-Vee in Washington and talked to the bakery manager - they were to make a 8 x 8 cake that was to be no more than 1 inch - he asked why 1 inch and I said it was to be the top of a present cake that I was to make for my Mom.

After our noon celebration, I went to get the boxes of cake out of the car and begin my cake decorating. Claudia, age 7, and Abby, age 4, asked if they could help me decorate. Since I'm too much of a perfectionist when it comes to cake decorating, I went outside and told myself that sometimes we need to give to others, especially when we recognize that God gives us presents for a reason. I have missed spending time with my Great Nieces and finally realized that this was definitely a moment that we 3 could have fun making a present for Grandma T.

The South side was completed by my HUBBY who does the following jobs in his spare time during the summer hours: main breakfast cook; mechanic, electrician, landscaper, driveway maintenance supervisor and operator, roofer, wood stove installer, lumberjack, garden planter, mole and gopher tracker, flat tire repairer, wheat farmer, cutting/baling hay famer, and the good looking pond guy who is my best friend - he says he will get bored if he takes too long of a break from any of these jobs - I think he should take a break - don't you? He did an outstanding job as you all can see by the BEFORE and AFTER pics.

Lloyd was happy to see more of his family join him on July 4th for the parade of his John Deere tractors. Lisa was riding on her Dad's John Deere D and waved to the crowd.

Ben was getting instructions before the parade to help Lloyd in case of the tractor not starting - might ask Lloyd who pulled whom at the beginning?

Lake Raking

We finally are able to maybe see the pond "at the end of the tunnel". We have spent more time & money on this pond and now know what we should have done at the beginning - build a hut in the trees for Lloyd to hunt down the Blue Heron!. Out of the 185 fish that we put into our pond, we now have less than half of the fish. The Blue Heron feeds only at early dawn and late dusk - it knows exactly when Lloyd appears out of the house.

If anyone knows of an idea for us to try, we would so appreciate any of your ideas. We really wanted to have fishing as part of our B&B - but at this rate, we might be having a fish hunt instead!

We also are attempting to get rid of the algae - after mowing all around the pond, purchasing a "lake rake" and raking the pond every day - we bought two containers of barley straw! Of course the top picture was taken on a very cool day and this picture was taken on a 97 degree day - we will take any of your comments / ideas on this topic also. Grass carp was an idea - however, the Department of Fishery said that the grass carp eats all bacteria from the pond and that the trout needs small amounts of algae for oxygen.

Again, if any of you knows a better way besides raking the lake - we would appreciate all of your comments / ideas on ponds and algae!!

Lloyd and his rake - I'm sure he would rather be fishing, not raking!! Lloyd said the other day, "now that I'm unable to get the 'SOB', I'm going to have to start practicing with the clays".

Truly, any ideas that anyone has - bring them on!!

We should have known that this was coming, especially since March came in at 60 degrees - if we read the Farmers Almanac, then March would end with this lovely snowstorm that gave us 24 in 36 (24 inches in 36 hours)

In a span of 10 miles - there were 5 one or two sided tunnels that were one lane wide - of course, they all were on corners / hills - that way you were blessed with the possibility of having to back down a hill if you met another car.

We noticed that while we were in the middle of the snowstorm that the ceiling drywall became more noticeable and then by the next morning, we had water dripping from the frame of the closet and bedroom ceiling - we had to take out three 5 gallon buckets of snow out of our attic of the house - the roof was not constructed correctly - by the end of the day we had many pieces of drenched insulation hanging on the deck to dry. We found out later that a few house in the area that were constructed at the same time as ours also had the same roof problem - Lloyd did an awesome job in knowing just how to fix our surprise - now we are ready for our next storm - hopefully, that does not happen until this Fall.

Lloyd had to keep a watchful eye on the leak in his shop so that his new paint job for Uncle Loy would not be ruined by Mother Nature!!

Lloyd is waving at us while he and Ben are taking a break from the bathroom project; it will be done in time for Casey, Annie and Avery's visit - lookin good!!

Lisa's hard work on the guest bedroom proved to be outstanding - beautiful color; her duvet cover/pillowcases added more color to the bedroom!! It was great to see the transformation!!

Grandma and Kayla are hard at work also - need to build the tower before Kayla squeals and hits the tower down!!

Grandpa was able to show Kayla how to make the tower higher;

of course, we know that "Papa" is Kayla's favorite!!!

While visiting Charlie in Phoenix - we visited a cactus nursery - it even came with its own giraffe!

Most of the cacti were covered with plastic cups - to keep them from freezing and having winter kill.

Lloyd is starting his winter art project in the basement

BOOK REVIEW - NO PLACE FOR A LADY

This book is a must read for all of you living in Colorado - and for those who always wanted to vacation in Colorado!!

Our friend released her first book of her 3 book series, "No Place for a Lady by Maggie Brendan", and it can be purchased at Borders, Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com.

The book is about a southern belle leaving Georgia in 1892 and going to her aunt's cattle ranch in Colorado. She had no idea that the scenery would be so different in the Yampa Valley. Even though the local women shunned her for being so different, soon many of them became good friends. Crystal and her foreman, Luke Webber, become very close also. Maggie Brendan does a great job in describing the cattle drive from Steamboat Springs to Denver.

It is a inspirational - historic - western - romantic book. Both of us enjoyed it thoroughly - Lloyd enjoyed it even though he said it was definitely a women's romantic book - he enjoyed the history of Colorado and the vivid description of the events.

Shirley enjoyed the book immensely - read it in 3 days - found myself reading into the late hours of the night.

Lloyd, Lisa, Ken & Ben and all three dogs decided that the bluff across the road

needed to be explored and defeated.

"Just a small jaunt" was the overall consensus!

Power of Prayer

Kevin, on the far left side of the picture, was a groomsmen at Lisa and Ben's wedding this summer. Kevin has been a very good friend of Lisa and Ben's in that they spent alot of great times together in their climbing, skiing experiences and just having great fun together.

He had a seizure while out snow skiing and on 12/16 /08 Kevin had surgery to remove the mass in his brain, which was detected on a MRI. Kevin's doctor incorrectly diagnosed Kevin after the surgery; we all thought the the worst was over. About 2 days later, the doctor called Kevin and his parents and explained that actually he has a worse type of brain cancer.

Kevin will be going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments after the sutures have healed on his head. Kevin is very optimistic, has a great positive outlook and has always been in excellent health.

Please continue your prayers for Kevin - he needs everyone's support and love during this difficult time of his life.

Christmas Smores served on the Veranda

On December 12 it was a balmy day of 55 degrees and Shirley decorated the house - then on December 14th, our high for the day was a minus 8.5 degrees - our low for the morning of December 15th was minus 16 degrees. I realize it is winter, but we are ready for warmer temperatures. We decided to celebrate these cold days with a fire to make Christmas Smores - come on over and we can sit on our veranda!!

We are at the end of the deer season and Lloyd was unable to get his deer this year - maybe next year. This week is when the turkey season starts up again. Our pond is now filling up with water - it will probably take about another month for it to be full - by that time, it might be ice skating time - it will be a nice addition to our place!!!
These Rocky Mountain sheep were up the hill in back of our house to the West - Lloyd heard that the last sheep seen was in 1930. These sheep were just placed up here several years ago to reintroduce to the area again.

Here is the completed summer project - will be great to plant deer resistant flowers next Spring!

This was the next best thing Lloyd decided to add - he is able to work on his projects outside on a solid surface - easier on his back!
Lloyd also added 5 additional water hydrants which are located around the house and near the shop - a great gift to Shirley, especially when she is washing her car so often!!

Pre-Sturgis Bike Run

Lloyd, Shirley and our fun cousins, Jim & Kris, took a 400 mile PreSturgis Bike Run from home - up to Newcastle, Wy - over to Lead / Deadwood (had to play the slots & of course, we acutually left with some winnings) - then to Sturgis for the PreShow - back home. The ride was fun - there were quite a few bikes out to see Sturgis also.
The weather gave us quite a show - this storm followed us all of the way from Rapid City to where we took shelter at about 30 miles north of Chadron - immediately after we went inside - we could hear the hail pounding on the building and then came the high winds!!

Our Bountiful Garden has given Shirley 2 purple ribbons (zuchinni squash & cucumbers) and 3 blue ribbons (lettuce, peas & yellow beans) at the County Fair. In the foreground are potatoes and then the tall bush is zuchinni which is surrounded by winter squash and cucumbers; the tomatoes have over grown the poles and the corn (3 - 50 ft rows) will be ready to harvest in probably about one more week. A close up of our tomato crop - here comes the Salsa!!

Thanks to Ken at U of Arizona - we were able to use this technique to help the tomatoes climb up instead of out - can see the tomatoes easier and help them ripen faster.

We planted our garden May 17th; everyone said we had planted way too early; however by June 1st - which was 2 weeks later - our bountiful garden was on its way.
This is the end of June and had picked the lettuce every 2 days and now are giving away lettuce to 5 of our neighbors - in the background is the corn (knee high before 4th of July) and the tomato plants (2 feet high).

Last Thursday we had a huge wind storm before we had our snowstorm on Friday that dropped 12 inches of snow - as you can see by the first picture - we had this object that hit squarely on the trailer - it was about 19 inches in diameter - we were lucky that Lloyd had removed his pulling tractor off the trailer and also lucky that it did not fall onto the dump truck- or it could have been a costly disaster - now all we have to do is saw this up for next winter's use!

Here we are near Custer, South Dakota. Please click on this - I think that the measurements of the horse's nostrils is amazing!!

When we first went to Crazy Horse Memorial - it was in the 1980's - sure wish there was more completed - I guess our grandchildren's children will probably get to see the completion.

This is the first sculpture to show to the Indian elders what the mountain would look like - this is a 1/34 scale of Crazy Horse Memorial.

This bronze statue is setting only on one of the horses's tail - the grass is too tall, but truly the horses's hoofs are not touching the ground - an awesome site!!

Second Day

Is this an experiment for physics class - or is it the next act for America's Got Talent?

Who says you cannot put saw horses on top of a 7 foot wheel-based scaffolding?

There are times either Lloyd looked like he was praying for help or are those young knees not what they used to be?

Sometimes this home-made 15 foot scaffolding is too tall, then you need to almost lay down to see it at another angle - Lloyd swears it is extremely safe! Dennis, our neighbor was not too thrilled to get up there - of course, we all know where Shirley is?

Third Day

Beginning of third day at 7:30am - still on the 7 ft scaffolding - has become Lloyd's favorite place to be - NOT!!

So the paint lady at Home Depot definitely did a sale on us - paint is not a deal after all!!

Lloyd will be doing summer fallow next week - so it is from one type of a pain to a next - thank goodness we have a hot tub or the tractor man would have a very hard time getting up in the morning.

Finally Lloyd realized that Shirley could help - moving the scaffolding himself was not always a good idea?

As Lloyd says, "Finally, I get a nice shop to work in - I'm Excited about getting rest of work completed - hopefully before the first snow flake falls!!

TIME FOR WORK / PLAY

Lloyd was able to find a tractor pull at the Dawes County Fair - he pulled 4 times - Lloyd placed first 4 times - we were hoping that the tractor club still wanted his membership after Lloyd took so many trophies home - we just got the membership application in the mail - YEA! YEA!

One of our friends, Dennis called us to come up on the Table Road at see a herd of 25 elk - these were the closest and biggest - of course it is not hunting season!

Lloyd was able to locate a combiner after help from our neighbors - the word got out - what great neighbors we have. This combine is 36 feet wide and the other two combines were 30 feet wide - therefore our fields were done in a mere 2 hours - pretty impressive - the combiner was from Mississippi.

I think that Lloyd missed his calling - he does outstanding work when working with wood - adding cabinets to our panty / laundry room - a fantastic present to Shirley!!

Our Friend of 38 years, Kay, is kicking up the dust on our circle drive around the place - guess who gave her the John Deere cap to wear on her excursion!! Kay said she likes our daily activities and looking forward to coming back to go riding again. We just bought another ATV so that we can both go on trips up to the hills - I can hear Shirley screaming now!!

Shirley's flower garden is doing outstanding - especially the lilies that Lila, a friend of Shirley's, gave to her - even our deer population has not found all this great tasting leaves yet - we think that possibly having the patio lights on at night keep them from coming any closer.

The Iowan mum plants are extremely big and green, but no blossoms - bummer!!

Here is another view of Shirley's garden - everything is doing well - we even have 25 tomatoes on the tomato plants in the container gardening.

Repair to Sell

Need to tear it out and replace with new driveway - of course we had to have a 6 inch snow in order to make it right!!

Most cherished time of our lives!

While our youngest daughter was home for a short memorable visit,

we were very lucky this past weekend to be in the presence of family time.

It was awesome to hear how each of the ones we love are doing in life...
listening to their past memories of times together...
remembering their fun times and antics together...
hearing about their present relationships with their own families/friendships...

Listening to possible future trips of seeing tigers, lions, great walls and/or lots of ice everywhere!!

It is a joy to see our family make family time in their lives a cherished time also.

Snow Record of + 64 days

This scene is quite normal here in Colorado - we still have 2 foot drifts in our front & back yards - the snowstorm that hit us first started December 20, 2006 - by this Thursday, the record is more than 64 straight days of snow on the ground - out here at our place, we will definitely hit that mark - unless the weather becomes a balmy 60-70 degree weather for the next three days.

We are now painting the interior of our home so that we can hopefully show it early this year - we hope that it will not take 18 months to go on to our next adventure - must always think positive.

Kayla is growing and staying awake more often - has the most beautiful eyes - Lisa, her Aunt, will be coming home soon to spending quality time with her most precious neice. Grandma & Grandpa have enjoyed being a part of Kayla's life. Kayla went to her first hockey game this past weekend and did great - the loud buzzer did not arouse her deep sleep.

Hot & Cold

We decided to have a burn after receiving 6 inches of snow;
and believe it or not, NO WIND!!

At first we thought it would not progress fast, but in about 10 minutes;
we need to get out the smores!!

The fire became rather high, but after about 3-4 hours, the pile was 85% burned;
luckily, the bunnies & toad escaped the high heat.

Here is our 6 inch snowfall;
nice to not have to spend the day clearing out major snow!!

ANOTHER RECORD SNOWSTORM

Lloyd kept saying over & over today, "I never thought we would ever get this much snow - and who wanted a white Christmas". Not only are we going to have a white Christmas, but it will probably be here after New Years. Parker was the second highest recording in the Denver Metro area - we got 37 inches of this white stuff that was incredibly hard to move around in and trying to do snow removal - Denver was shut down and the Governor declared state of emergency because of the blizzard - all of the major interstates were closed for two full days - the authorities are still saying that travel is discouraged on the interstates going toward Nebraska & DIA was shut down for 2 full days - with 3000 passengers stranded there overnight.

These pictures just do not show the depth - we had 5 - 7 foot drifts - Lloyd went out on the road to do snow removal and the tractor was stuck in the ditch for about 2 hours - there was about 2 feet of snow on the road - one of the guys had a snowblower on the back of his tractor - made a path so that we could get the tractor out of the ditch.

This picture is to show just how deep the snow was on just the driveway - the shovel measures 54 inches - it took about 3 hours to shovel half of the driveway off.

Here is another shot of how high the drift is at the side door - the snow was very dry, which was a good thing for snow removal - we are thinking of selling both houses and moving down to Tucson to live near Ken & Cheryl - OK guys!

Gautier, Mississippi 2006 Mission trip

November 12-18th, 2006; mission trip to Gautier, Mississippi

I was blessed to be able to be a part of such humbling experience - I saw us as the Unity of the Community - the unity of all church volunteers working together to serve the community of Gautier, Mississippi - we gave the community hope, which would enable them to see the light at the end of the destruction

This was our housing for the week that we spent in Gautier, Mississippi - these "pods" were made out of very stiff cardboard, covered with plastic - which kept out the elements of moisture. The "pods" were sitting on pallets and we had our own front porch - that was helpful especially when it rained 2.7 inches in one day.

As you can see, the door was held shut by 2 wooden slats - not keys! - therefore, you did need to sweep the "pod" out everyday so that those visitors - mice - did not come to see you in the middle of the night. Our door handle inside was a bunge cord attached from the make-shift clothesline - to a handle made of cloth - worked excellent!

This was the inside of our home - was quite roomy - we slept on cots - of course, me the night owl could not fall to sleep so my roommate and I did alot of talking - was interesting to see how organized you could stay for how long with leiving out of a suitcase for a whole week?

One night when it started to rain at 2:00am - it was the best for me - we had lightning, thunder & rain - all at the same time - that seems to never happen in Colorado - however by morning time, our cardboard floor was flooded - we had to mop the cardboard so it could dry during the rainy day - amazing - we were actually mopping a cardboard floor!!

Gautier, Mississippi - 2006 mission trip

Here is our dining room / break room that we used for our meals (breakfast & dinner) while we were volunteers for the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. As ou can see at the bottom of the picture, there is a kerosene heater - we used that often - it was very chilly while we were in Mississippi - the average high was arond 50 degrees and the average low was around 30 degrees - the heater came in handy when we were in this tent at night while playing card games with everyone.

This building was on one end of the tent - this was our kitchen - a place were everyone became chefs of the camp. The law of the kitchen - no one could walk through unless you are the chefs of the day & everything needed to be washed down including the floor after each meal - if not, we would have mice - we are out in the middle of a field, so we really did not want to have extras to cook for!!

This kitchen was equipped with a gas stove - the oven temperature was not set right - therefore, we would be baking cakes at 500 degrees, but the heat temperature was actually 300 degrees - it was a challenge, but we had fun being creative & sharing receipes. Breakfast crew would start at 5:30am - I was on the crew - hard to believe that I could function at that time of the morning - for two mornings we made 75-80 pancakes - half were blueberry - delicious!!

Here is the buffet line for breakfast - at this table, we also would make our bag lunches for noon - sometimes we would have breakfast items for our lunch - an interesting lunch someone had was a pancake with grape jelly, a sausage patty and lettuce for their sandwich.

Gautier, Mississippi 2006 Mission Trip

This family was always thanking us for our; the daughter told us she had applied to work with mudding drywall for a nearby construction company - we all taught her and she was proud of
herself in that she mudded her entire bedroom - we were proud of her too!

The family lived in this trailer, which had 4 feet of water in it at the time of the hurricane; the trailer sits up about 4 feet off the the ground; as you can see it is a trailer as a shell - just the studs and the metal shell with a roof - they were telling us that it was rather cold in the winter - the heating vents were a hole all the way through to the ground - there was no enclosed bottom to this trailer - they had no lineolum or carpeting on the floor - very bare; they thanked us often for helping them with insulating and drywalling their home.

Leisha, Steve, Cliff, Judy & I worked on this project. One day as I was talking with the daughter, I asked if there were any books out there that showed pictures of the destruction. The daughter, who does not have much, gave me her book and signed it. As a volunteer in the Mission group - one of the jobs is to learn to listen to the people - everyone wanted you to know as much as you could as to what has happened to them - you can see the chaos of destruction and how our help in starting to rebuild their homes gave them hope and also showed them how to continue the rebuilding process.

We went to the Goodwill store one morning, which was closed for another 30 minutes, so I decided to go into a bar which was located near the Goodwill store - we told the three guys that were in the bar that we were volunteers for the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and explained that this trailer needed cabinets and wanted to know where to find some used ones; they told us about where the Salvation Army warehouse was and then this gentleman (as shown below) said that he was going to be taking damaged cabinets out of a house that had a fire in it; he took my cellphone# and said he would call in a few days if the cabinets were not too damage; we said OK and started to drive back to the trailer.

Within 5 minutes this gentleman called my cellphone and asked for directions to the trailer, he followed us there and started measuring in the trailer; after he wrote a few items, he gave me his card which said, "Boyd's Cabinetry"; he said he would call that afternoon and let us know if the cabinets would work; he did call back the next day and said he was sorry that they were too damaged; but that he would keep this family in mind and would definitely help them out at his own cost.

ISN'T IT GREAT TO SEE HOW GOD WORKS IN OUR LIVES EVERYDAY!

Gautier, Mississippi - 2006 Mission Trip

We helped this family by installing insulation in six rooms
what a gracious family this was to work for.

Kathy is showing our latest fashion that we wore most every day.
The masks were a must - you would choke on the insulation fibers if you did not wear one. When I was taking pictures of the everyone working, I noticed this white stuff in the corners of the wall studs - found out it was field cotton that was used as an insulator when the Great Grandfather built the house in 1950's.

Bill & Sandy were measuring for 24" insulation when all we had was 19"
therefore, we ended taping two different widths together to make it fit correctly for the inspection; we were so tired that day that we decide to go to lunch and then come back and sweep the house before we were to leave; however when we came back from lunch - the daughter had brought over the 24" insulation that we needed in the morning - it helped us to complete the job.

We had hoped that we could have helped this family more, but we were to leave the next day to go back to Iowa - the family members would come out quite often to thank us for our hard work - it was a joy to help them out!

This is where I'll be Nov 12th - Nov 18th with 11 others from my hometown church, United Presbyterian Church of Washington, Iowa.

I wanted to share this humbling moment with all of you. I'm taking my camera and notepad to document our small token of our gift of help to Mississippi. We are going to Gautier, Mississippi and we will be set up in a field that was formerly farmland.

Number of beds: 74

This village is primarily engaged in rebuilding, with the greatest need being for roofers until it gets too hot. Additional skills include doing drywall, carpentry work, painting, electrical and plumbing. There is also need for kitchen help and administrative work in the office or tool tent for those who may not feel comfortable doing rebuilding.

Pray that we all stay healthy, be energized and be attentive and learn from the stories that the people will share with us.

A good friend of ours reminded me that a blog is also about communicating your life by words and also pictures. My friend, Brenda, is an awesome writer and has a a gift from God that gives us joy when reading her blog - you feel like she is right there talking to you in person! Thanks Brenda for sharing your gift with all of us!

Our blog originally was set up for our daughters - they wanted to see our progression as we were transforming our new home into our next step of life - retirement our way - changing jobs and location - going back to what we love - country living near a small town - that is where we started our lives before we met. As they say, "you can take the person out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the person."

We are now slowly moving from our present home to our new retirement home and hope to be there permanently next year, but that is hard to say with the current housing market. We have added a new building for Lloyd's toys and Shirley is using the loft for her craft room - scrapbooking, quilting & jig-!saw puzzles. We are looking forward to going to the pinochle parties with good friends this winter!

Since the fishing charters had not been out for 3 days because of rain and high winds,

Our Weatherperson (aka Lisa) gave us a beautiful sunny day in Homer for our wild fish tales

as displayed below; Ben caught the second to the largest halibut - 39 pounds; YEAH BEN!!

Another fantastic day - a bus tour that started at 5:30am - thanks B & L Tours

We saw 12 wolves, 8 caribous, 5 grizzly brown bears, 3 golden eagles & a partridge in a pear tree (actually it was a homer marmot)
